Art of the Heist Classic

Cops and Robbers (1973)

Hoezo in KINO

“Smart and stupid at the same time, just like a cop.” One of our favourite discoveries during our lockdown binge watching was this small United Artists crime movie about two of the New York’s ‘Finest’, fed up with their dangerous and underpaid job deciding to use their badge to pull off a daring raid on a Wall Street bank. The laidback vibe, the lived-in characters and a great soundtrack make this a comforting cinematic experience that makes you nostalgic for a New York you’ve never known. Luckily it is still there: in movies like this. Added bonus: Joe Spinell pops up for a cameo, so you know it’s bonafide “Fear City” 70’s cinema. Also, this is the favorite film of the Safdie brothers (Uncut GemsGood Time). English language without subtitles.

Storyline

Frustrated with their work and their meager paychecks, New York City police officers Joe (Joseph Bologna) and Tom (Cliff Gorman) decide to pull a heist while the city is distracted by a parade. After a meeting with a mobster who’s looking for bearer bonds, the men rob a bank and walk away with millions of dollars in loot. But when a planned exchange of the bonds for cash goes awry, the officers try to fix the mess before their colleagues figure out who staged the crime.
