Art of the Heist Classic

Rififi (1955)

Hoezo in KINO

No heist retrospective would be complete without this brilliant and highly influential French noir helmed by American director Jules Dassin, who was blacklisted in his own country during The Red Scare. The iconic heist sequence is over 30 minutes long and contains no dialogue or musical score; just high tension created by the job at hand. Composer George Auric insisted on providing a score for the sequence but when Dassin showed him the heist twice – with and without his music – Auric had to admit: “no music.” Synchronize your watches for this one because we’re only screening Rififi twice, so get those tickets early. French language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Out of prison after a five-year stretch, jewel thief Tony (Jean Servais) turns down a quick job his friend Jo (Carl Mohner) offers him, until he discovers that his old girlfriend Mado (Marie Sabouret) has become the lover of local gangster Pierre Grutter (Marcel Lupovici) during Tony’s absence. Expanding a minor smash-and-grab into a full-scale jewel heist, Tony and his crew appear to get away clean, but their actions after the job is completed threaten the lives of everyone involved.
