Special Gaspar Noé
The Work and Inspiration of Gaspar Noé

Cinéma Viscéral: Profondo Rosso (1975)

Hoezo in KINO

As legendary director Dario Argento commands the lead in Gaspar Noé’s latest film Vortex, we’re proud to screen two of his infamous ‘giallo’ features. Argento’s big international breakthrough was this ultra stylish and slick slasher that is full of cinematographic juxtaposition and grand setpieces that plunge you in a truly dazzling murder mystery where the hunt for a killer plays out concurrently with the assailant offing the people that could expose him. This genre defining feature was for many the gateway drug to the Italian sub-genre and still stands tall as one of Argento’s finest outings as a director. Italian Language with English subtitles. On 10.11 Eye-filmprogrammer Ronald Simons will give an introduction on the films of Dario Argento and the Giallo genre.

Storyline

A psychic medium (Macha Méril) is brutally murdered, and musician Marcus Daly (David Hemmings) feels a need to solve the case, since he was the one who discovered the body. Working with him is reporter Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi), who hopes for a big scoop by solving the case. When one of Marcus’s own friends ends up murdered at the hands of the same killer, the resourceful pair realize they must work fast to uncover the murderer’s identity or they might serve as the maniac’s next victims.

On 10.11 Ronald Simons will give an introduction before the screening. He will talk about the genre of the giallo and about maestro Dario Argento. To say Ronald is a dear friend of Argento would be exaggerating, but together with Martin Koolhoven he invited Dario Argento in The Netherlands in 2017 for the 4K restoration of SuspiriaRonald a film programmer at Eye Filmmuseum, editor in chief of The Cult Corner and writes as a freelance film reviewer for Preview Magazine and Schokkend Nieuws.

To celebrate Noé’s latest film Vortex and his unique and darkly twisted oeuvre, KINO presents a selection of his own work and the films that inspired him. A divergent collage of cinematic outings that influenced his work: from the masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey (on 70mm!) and the anti-fascist shock cinema of Pasolini’s Salò to the ‘giallo’ chillers of Dario Argento. Join us in taking a deep dive into the visceral cinematic world that shaped the work of this singular director. Strap in, it’s going to be one hell of a ride. Trailer: Baris Azman
