Probably the best film you’ll only see once is turning twenty this year and it has lost none of its punch-to-the-gut (or fire-extinguisher-to-the-head) power since. Gaspar Noé’s international breakthrough will always be remembered for the two shocking and prolonged scenes of (sexual) violence but it is so much more than that: the disorientating camerawork, the nauseating score by Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and the brilliant casting of real-life couple Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci all make this tragedy in reverse one of the most devastating and memorable cinematic nightmares one can experience.
