Special a 70mm presentation Classic

The Searchers (1956) – a 70mm presentation

Hoezo in KINO

It’s a great time to be a film enthusiast. The continuing re-appreciation for celluloid has emboldened film studios to delve into their archives and strike stunning (and rather expensive) new prints from classic titles and we are overjoyed to be the first cinema on European soil to present the brand new 70mm print from John Ford’s controversial masterpiece The Searchers. The print is produced from the original VistaVision camera negative, a format three times larger than 35mm. This format was developed in the 1950’s next to Cinerama and CinemaScope to quite literally enhance the cinematic experience in the battle against the rise of television. The majestic vistas of the Wild West are the perfect decor to experience this epic format and (re)discover this staunch classic of American cinema.

The Searchers is an intimate character study painted on the grandest of canvasses about a broken man consumed by revenge and hate, searching for his niece in a country shaped by blood, greed and genocide. You know, the American frontier. In a way John Wayne was perfect for the lead as his belief system off-screen more or less represented his on-screen persona’s justifications for violence. Legendary director John Ford almost single handedly forged the western genre and was responsible for its deceivingly simple cinematic language we now take as gospel. Kurosawa, Scorsese, Spielberg and nowadays even Tarantino recognize Ford’s influence and The Searchers was his undeniable masterpiece. Presented with English language without subtitles.
