Special Bong Joon-ho
Hits from the Bong:

The Host (2006)

Hoezo in KINO

When Bong Joon Ho discussed choosing a monster movie as his third film after the critical acclaim of Memories of Murder, many friends and colleagues advised against it. Luckily this only strengthened Bong’s resolve to build a creature feature around an actual incident of Seoul’s Han River being polluted by chemical waste originating from an American military base. The result is the tale of a huge mutant fish goblin terrorizing the banks of the Han river and a working class family having to take matters into their own hands to retrieve one of their own taken by the monster as the government bungles its response. The Host was a huge hit in Korea and then the highest grossing film of all time (now #7). We’re only allowed to screen the film twice so don’t miss out! Korean language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Following the dumping of gallons of toxic waste in the river, a giant mutated squid-like creature appears and begins attacking the populace. Gang-du’s daughter Hyun-seo is snatched up by the creature; with his family to assist him, he sets off to find her.

We’re pretty confident in stating that Bong Joon Ho is a Rotterdam man at heart. Since his debut full-length feature, the Korean maverick director has premiered most of his films at IFFR and even when Oscar immortality was upon him in 2020, Bong somehow found the time to host a masterclass in our fair city. With two films in the making – his much anticipated sci-fi Mickey17 and an animated feature both set for 2025 releases, we are very excited to announce that we’re screening all but one of his films (Okja is not available for theatrical exhibition) this summer.

We are ecstatic that three time Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho took the time between finishing two(!) new projects to chat with us about his films and his love for cinema. We kick off here with Bong’s salute to the KINO audience, but you can catch other segments of the conversation in our cinema preceding the upcoming screenings.
