Special Classic Powell & Pressburger

Peeping Tom (1960)

Hoezo in KINO

This proto-serial killer film is Powell’s only directorial effort in this retrospective without his longtime companion Pressburger. Released in the same year as Psycho (that other ‘depraved’ classic), Peeping Tom caused such an outrage in the UK it was pulled from theaters after just five days, basically ending Powell’s career as a filmmaker. The story follows Mark, a socially awkward young man plagued by childhood trauma, stalking the London streets with a murderous gaze assisted by his camera, prowling for the next victim. Peeping Tom is considered the first ‘slasher’ film that utilizes point-of-view shots of the killer – which would become a trusty technique for the genre. From Italian giallo to the 80’s US horror, many owe gratitude to Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom. English language with Dutch subtitles.

Storyline

Loner Mark Lewis works at a film studio during the day and, at night, takes racy photographs of women. Also he’s making a documentary on fear, which involves recording the reactions of victims as he murders them. He befriends Helen, the daughter of the family living in the apartment below his, and he tells her vaguely about the movie he is making.
