Robby Müller: Director of Photography

Living the Light: Robby Müller (2018)

Hoezo in KINO

Claire Pijman’s documentary is a lovely tribute to and celebration of one of the greatest cameramen of all time. Pijman interviews his frequent collaborators, such as Jim Jarmusch (who also made the score) and Wim Wenders, but what’s most fascinating is that this documentary really shows how Müller captured everything around him on video and photography. It’s largely made up of footage of Müller from his personal archive, from his stays in hotel rooms to his personal life. Essential viewing for everyone who’s interested in Robby Müller’s work. Don’t miss the footage of his voicemail messages!
After the screening of the documentary on 19.09 director Claire Pijman and Müller’s wife Andrea Müller-Schirmer will be present to tell you more about the making of the documentary and Müller’s work.

For her extraordinary film essay, Living the Light, Director and Director of Photography Claire Pijman had access to the thousands of Hi8 video diaries, pictures and Polaroids that Müller photographed while he was at work on one of the more than 70 features he shot throughout his career; often with long term collaborators such as Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Lars von Trier. The film intertwines these images with excerpts of his oeuvre, thus creating a fluid and cinematic continuum. In his score for Living the Light Jim Jarmusch gives this wide raging scale of life and art an additional musical voice.
