Waterloo (1970)

Hoezo in KINO

Where Ridley Scott’s extravagant ‘biopic’ Napoleon paints with the broadest of brushes, it’s Sergei Bondarchuk’s (War and Peace) flopped-and-forgotten epic Waterloo from 1970 that dedicates its entire runtime to Napoleon’s final battle with meticulous precision. By delving deep into this one battle, it reveals more about the person and tactician Napoleon was than the recent film. Thousands of extras and tons of explosives were utilized to recreate this fateful battle on a scale only Bondarchuk ever could. Waterloo is a must-see war epic true(er) to historical record with absolute awe inspiring vistas and a formidable cast lead by Rod Steiger as the (allegedly) vertically challenged military mastermind. English language with Dutch subtitles. Introduced by our Head of Projection and occasional special programmer, Jürgen Zweers.
