The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974)

Hoezo in KINO

Two years after his amazonic adventure, Herzog set out to film the strange real-life story of Kaspar Hauser, a young man found in Nuremberg in 1828, barely able to speak or even walk. Herzog cast the borderline vagrant musician and painter Bruno S. as Hauser. A man perfect for the role as his childhood was similarly filled with traumatic events, even being experimented on by the nazi’s during Hitler’s rule. A hauntingly beautiful performance by S. is the center of this strange but compelling story. German Language with English subtitles.

The film follows Kaspar Hauser (Bruno S.), who lived the first seventeen years of his life chained in a tiny cellar with only a toy horse to occupy his time, devoid of all human contact except for a man who wears a black overcoat and top hat who feeds him.
