Robby Müller: Director of Photography

The American Friend (1977)

Hoezo in KINO

By the time Robby Müller and Wim Wenders made the neo-noir The American Friend, they were already collaborating for almost 10 years. Every frame feels like a painting, which is not a coincidence since Müller drew inspiration from Edward Hopper. What stands out is the heavy saturated colors, just notice the use of red, orange, blue, and green and the presence of fluorescent lighting. Also, we love seeing big cities set in the 70s, with lots of neon lighting.
