The Scorsese masterpiece about a disturbed Vietnam veteran reintegrating in a decaying 70’s New York City is famous for many things: De Niro’s career-best role, Scorsese’s sublime direction, its social commentary and psychological depiction of PTSD and the wonderful last score that Bernard Herrmann would ever make. But more overlooked, the movie is bursting with references to Existentialist texts written by famed authors such as Dostoevsky, Sartre and Camus.
