There are many an anime produced about ‘ronin’, masterless samurai roaming the countryside in search for adventure and heroics, and titles such as Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai and the great Ninja Scroll all fit the bill. As does Sword of the Stranger, yet it adds some magic to the often austere subgenre, with great characters, stunning animation and genuinely impressive sword fight choreography. This standalone feature was produced by Studio Bones, known for Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Mob Psycho 100 and My hero Academia. Japanese language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Pursued by formidable Chinese assassins, young Kotaro and his dog run into No Name, a mysterious stranger who gets pulled into the chase. The unlikely companions form a bond over saving the dog from a poison attack, but chaos erupts when the assassins find Kotaro, and No Name must face his past before a horrible fate is met again.
