Satoshi Kon’s debut feature had a profound impact on Japanese animation as the art form rarely veered into the realm of the psychological thriller. The film blends reality, fiction and psychosis into a nightmarish vision on the trappings of life in the spotlight and internet stalking (in 1997!). Perfect Blue had a big influence on Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and this film remains a true classic that can be counted among anime’s greatest achievements, right next to Ghost in the Shell and Akira.
