Within the cyberpunk craze that started with Blade Runner, one maverick Italian decided to make a European version of the future. Gabriele Salvatores banked his 1992 Oscar win clout from Mediterraneo and built within the Milan Film Studios a dazzling futuristic world where many cultures coexist (there’s even Dutch dialogue). Nirvana is full of intriguing ideas, visually impressive, engaging, and thought-provoking, starring Christopher Lambert (Highlander, Fortress) and Emmanuelle Seigner (Bitter Moon). This hidden gem asking existential questions about consciousness remains largely unseen, although it was selected at the time for the Cannes Film Festival. Italian language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Jimi, a computer game designer, finds that his latest product has been infected by a virus which has given consciousness to the main character of the game, Solo. Tormented by the memory of his fled girlfriend Lisa and begged by Solo to end its useless “life”, Jimi begins a search for people who can help him both to discover what happened to Lisa and to delete his game before it is released.
