Cult Status: Cannibal Holocaust (1980) – a 16mm presentation

Hoezo in KINO

Sadly the visionary Italian director Ruggero Deodato passed away late last year. His oeuvre is maybe not as well known except for his notorious faux found footage schlocker, Cannibal Holocaust (1980). This truly shocking exploitation film heavily criticized the way mass media portrays Americans and questions what it is to be ‘civilized’. The film depicts a team of anthropologists venturing into the Amazonian Jungle to find out what happened to a group of young filmmakers. When visiting a cannibalistic tribe, they stumble on the footage of the filmmakers. Upon return to New York, the footage shows the gruesome fate of the intruders but also questions their motives and actions. The imagery in Cannibal Holocaust proved to be so realistic (at the time), that Deodato was charged with murder and the film was banned in multiple countries for its depiction of atrocities. KINO will screen this film for one time only in 16mm (provided by BUT), the preferred format for cult and exploitation films due to its lower cost and easier (illegal) distribution. The screening will be introduced by our head projectionist and programmer of this evening, Jürgen Zweers. English language with Dutch subtitles. [WARNING: This film contains graphic depiction of sexual assault and actual animal cruelty. Part of the proceeds will go towards De Dierenambulance]
