ENFF On Tour:

Celts

Hoezo in KINO

Eastern Neighbors Film Festival is back ON TOUR with one of the most acclaimed Serbian films of the last decade. A special screening of Celts with a special guest actor Jovan Belobrkovic is set for October 19. Since its world premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlinale last year, young filmmaker Milica Tomovic has received many accolades for her first feature movie, including the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Director. Through the depiction of the everyday life of an ordinary family and their friends, Celts skillfully reflects the downfall of society during the turbulent year of 1993 in Belgrade. As Cineuropa pointed out, “Tomovic makes the viewer question their own perception and memory, resulting in a film that feels like a stone in your shoe.”

Storyline

Belgrade, 1993. Serbia is at war, people are suffering from sanctions and inflation, but everyone is doing what they can. Marijana throws a costume party for her daughter’s 8th birthday, with family and fellow parents attending. Grabbing a rare opportunity when their kids are being kept entertained in the other room, the parents open a few bottles in the kitchen and enjoy their reunion. Marijana suddenly realises that she longs for more than a bunch of drunken guests and an inattentive husband, so she sets out to discover the thrills the night has to offer. The party slowly disperses, just like Yugoslavia, the country Marijana and her friends were all born in.
