After our journey to the Big Apple in 2017, this October we undertake a cinematic city trip to dazzling Tokyo. This metropolis has been the neon lit decor of countless films and in this series we try to showcase the many styles and genres Japanese cinema has to offer. From October 2nd we embark on a chronological journey through seven features – from the war ravished 1950’s to the futuristic dystopian cityscapes of 2019 Neo-Tokyo – experiencing the ever changing city as the backdrop for deranged yakuza antics, gender-redefining subcultures, highly stylized supernatural brawls and drug fueled nocturnal odysseys. It’s going to be a weird and wonderful ride. All presentations will be in original Japanese with English subtitles unless specifically mentioned otherwise.
To kickstart our journey through the streets of Tokyo, we will be screening Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s masterpiece Akira (1988)
