“I think that within human nature, and within the human heart as well, there’s just a ton of absurd impulses and instincts.” Starting April 9th KINO is proud to present The Complete Satoshi Kon. Four animated features written and directed by an artist that might not be known by many people outside of the Japanese anime community but whose work has had a profound influence on pop culture and major Hollywood directors. His life was tragically cut short by illness in 2010, but his legacy as one of the animation greats was well established with his work on countless graphic novels, animated shorts, series and the four feature length films presented here. We invite you to discover his wildly inventive and often mind boggling work on the big screen, all presented in Japanese with English subtitles.
Films in this program:
During a Christmas Eve in Tokyo, three homeless people, middle-aged alcoholic Gin, former drag queen Hana, and dependent runaway girl Miyuki, discover an abandoned newborn while looking through the garbage. With only a handful of clues to the baby’s identity, the three misfits search the city to find its parents.

When a machine that allows therapists to enter their patient’s dreams is stolen, all hell breaks loose. Only a young female therapist can stop it: PaprikaPaprika is perhaps Satoshi Kon’s boldest creation, both in visual storytelling and narrative trickery. This riveting mindbender explores what transpires when a device that grants the user access to the dreams of others falls in the wrong hands (and yes, we guess Mr. Nolan saw this one before writing Inception). A visionary work of art that proves again that the western perception that animation is mainly a kid’s game is utter tosh. Japanese language with English subtitles.
