On 29 July the wonderful singer/songwriter Glen Hansard died in a motorcycle crash in Dublin, aged 56. In December we’re screening the film thad made him famous, and in which he mostly played himself: a street musician spending a week writing songs with Czech pianist Markéta Irglová. It was John Carney’s claim-to-fame too. And then to think, he shot for only seventeen days on wobbly DV and available light. He wasn’t making a film so much as a demo, but the demo turned out to be the master.
Once is simply magical. Trust us, or trust Roger Ebert (who fell competely in love with the film). Song ‘Falling Slowly’ won an Oscar and Sundance gave Once its Audience Award. Come sing along softly.
A Dublin street musician plays for coins by day and repairs vacuum cleaners in his father’s shop, still writing songs about the girlfriend who left him. One evening a young Czech immigrant stops to listen, asks too many questions and turns out to be a pianist herself. Over the course of a week they write, rehearse and record together, and something grows between them that neither quite puts into words.

In Mark Rosenblatts toneelstuk speelt John Lithgow een fantastische Roald Dahl, als een 1,95 meter groot probleem: briljant, gruwelijk charmant – en diepgeworteld antisemitisch.
