Remote. Control. The Cinema of Michael Haneke

“I’m lucky enough to be able to make films and so I don’t need a psychiatrist.” KINO dives into the filmography of Austrian director Michael Haneke, the undisputed ‘Meister’ of creating unease, dread and foreboding. Haneke started directing at the age of 46 after an academic career including philosophy, drama and psychology. His analytical approach to filmmaking focuses on the moral questions posed by the commodification of violence in pop culture, the ever expanding consequences of our colonial past and the brutal impact of seemingly random encounters. Haneke much prefers asking questions to giving answers, leaving the usually pampered viewers to fend for themselves in extracting meaning, purpose and motivation from his films, making his work impenetrable to some and controversial to others, but always worthy of analysis and in our eyes, re-appraisal. His eleven theatrical features (minus his own shot-for-shot US remake of Funny Games) are presented in their original language with English subtitles.
