In just shy of 90 minutes, Lynne Ramsay left us devastated at the back-end of the 2017 Cannes festival and absolutely convinced us that this was Joaquin Phoenix’ career best performance embodying a PTSD addled Iraq vet that goes full Home Depot Travis Bickle on a child sex trafficking ring to retrieve a little girl from their clutches. A powerful, lean, brutal film that safely resides in our top twenty best films of this godforsaken new century. Even with this dire subject matter Ramsay finds beauty and humanity in the most unlikeliest locations, like a blood-soaked kitchen floor, after a deadly exchange of fire. A true, and criminally underappreciated masterpiece. English language with Dutch subtitles.
