Hoezo in KINO

A captivating evening showcasing the exceptional talent and vision of female directors in animation. The program features a selection of short animations from around the globe, each reflecting unique storytelling styles, innovative techniques, and diverse cultural perspectives. This event highlights women’s voices in animation. voices that have often been underrepresented yet have significantly shaped the art form. From visually stunning experimental pieces to heartfelt narratives, this collection celebrates the power of animation as a medium for creativity, expression, and connection.
 
This program is curated by Nahid Malayeri and Narjes Mohammadi. After graduating from St. Joost School of Art and Design with a master’s in animation, they combine their creative expertise with a passion for collecting, selecting, and presenting animation art. Together, they have redefined the landscape of animation by focusing on collections by female directors. So far they have collaborated with Museum Arnhem, Kaboom Film Festival, Filmhuis Cavia, and Rozet in Arnhem.

Storyline

  1. Percebes (2024, France, Portugal) 12 mins – by Laura Gonçalves & Alexandra Ramires: With the sea and the urban Algarve as a background, we follow a complete cycle of the life of a special shellfish called PERCEBES, goose barnacle. From their formation, to the dish, in this journey, we cross different contexts that allow us to better understand this region and those who live there.
  2. Mother’s Child (2024, Netherlands) 9 mins – by Naomi Noir: Mary struggles daily with being a mother and full-time carer for her disabled son. The authorities are not helpful and she is at risk of drowning in a sea of bureaucracy.
  3. Swimming With Wings (2023, Israel, Netherlands) 10 mins – by Daphna Awadish Golan: Lyri recently moved to the Netherlands with her family and reflects on her experiences adjusting to this new environment. Although she would have preferred to stay in Israel, she finds herself navigating a world filled with unfamiliar customs. One of the most striking differences she notes is that children in the Netherlands learn to swim in their street clothes, highlighting the unique cultural practices she is encountering.
  4. Shadows (2024, Jordan,France) 12 mins – by Rand Beiruty: At a crowded airport, Ahlam, a 14-year old mother, is running away from Baghdad, the only place she’s ever known. As she fights the shadows lurking around her, she reflects on her journey to reclaim her life.
  5. Nun or Never! (2023, Finland) 10 mins – by Heta Jäälinoja: The nuns are living melted together in happy harmony. When one nun finds a man in the garden, the harmony breaks and she loses the rhythm with others. When her dreams do not come true, she finds out that everyone in the community has their own hidden universe.
  6. My Mother’s Pain (2020, Colombia) 6 mins – by Juliana Erazo: This animated documentary and visual essay, tells the story of three generations of mothers and daughters in the same family. Their struggles and growth and how they worked to make their children’s life better than their own.
  7. The Fourth Wall (2021, Iran) 10 mins – by Mahboobeh Kalaee: A family kitchen becomes very lively when seen through the eyes of a young boy with a vivid imagination.
  8. Affairs of the Art (2021, United Kingdom) 16 mins – by Joanna Quinn: Fifty-nine-year-old factory worker Beryl is totally obsessed with drawing, and her fixation dominates the entire household. Apart from her husband, Ivor, Beryl’s model and muse, the whole family is addicted to something: her son, Colin, is a technical geek and her sister, Beverly, is a fanatically narcissistic taxidermist. Obsession is in the family’s DNA.
