Czechoslovak New Wave:

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)

Hoezo in KINO

At the end of the Czech New Wave movement that exploded onto the film world a decade prior, the time for satirizing too close to reality had firmly passed, but there was still opportunity for some movie magic to slip past the film censors. This strange and wonderful fairytale might be light on plot, it’s heavy on visual splendor and strange iconography that feels like a grown-up, full colour trip to the darker parts of Oz. The film is presented in a truly stunning 35mm print, with Czech language and English subtitles.

Storyline

Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.
