Jacques Audiard, whose upcoming film Emilia Pérez is an Oscar-favorite, was working steadily as a director from 1994 but his international breakthrough came with the 2009’s Un prophète. A brutal, shank-in-the-flank, rags-to-riches crime epic that starts off in the worst situation possible for its protagonist: alone in prison having to navigate the general population consisting of the very worst La République has locked away. Tahar Rahim delivers a tour de force performance as the young start-up quickly recruited by a Corsican crime lord (a scarily great Niels Arestrup) only ending up having to challenge even him. A raw cinematic experience that demands to be seen on a big screen. French language with English subtitles.

Storyline

Sentenced to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena is alone in the world and can neither read nor write. On his arrival at the prison, he seems younger and more brittle than the others detained there. At once he falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the ‘missions’ go by, he toughens himself and wins the confidence of the Corsican group.
