We can now safely state that was certainly the case. It’s PTA’s courageous writing and directing, Robert Elswit’s baffling cinematography, Jonny Greenwood’s haunting score and Jack Fisk’s sensational woodwork on the production design that set the stage for the greatest embodiment of a character that defines our age of bloodthirsty greed. Daniel Day-Lewis creates Daniel Plainview from his staunch stride to the gravelly, at times guttural vocals in a way that is repugnant yet utterly magnetic and endlessly (re)watchable.
