“Danny! I’m coming! I’m right behind ya!” With The Shining, Jack Nicholson delivers the pinnacle of psychotic scenery chewing in one of the most iconic roles of his career, Stanley Kubrick’s oeuvre and the screen acting profession at large. The BTS stories are well documented: a director prone to endless takes and psychological torture (especially bestowed on poor Shelley Duvall, who was never the same after this) and restricting cast and crew to an isolated location for over fifty weeks instead of the promised seventeen. The end result however is magnificent and anyone else but Nicholson roaming the corridors of the Overlook Hotel and succumbing to its eternal allure is just impossible to imagine.
