Remote. Control. The Cinema of Michael Haneke

The Seventh Continent (1989)

Hoezo in KINO

Haneke’s first theatrical feature immediately set the stage for his fascination for the mundane masking the monstrous. The Seventh Continent is a three-act structure depiction of the same day in three consecutive years of an unassuming middle-class family bound for a dark path. The first of Haneke’s self-baptized “emotional glaciation trilogy” – depicting life in a colder and more distant manner – is a debut that hits the ground (and the audience) running. The director’s proclaimed love for French director Robert Bresson is palpable in his use of austere mise-en-scene, dead-pan acting and communicating grander themes through visual storytelling. German language with English subtitles.
