“I’ve run out of everything – my wife… the house… an adopted child… a successful job… everything except a few bad habits I could not get rid of.” Italian maestro of the liminal space, Michelangelo Antonioni completed his English language trilogy under MGM studios with The Passenger. Jack Nicholson, now a global superstar, was a great admirer of the director’s work and eager to collaborate with the man who regarded his often iconic actors (Vitti, Delon, Mastroianni, Moreau) as merely shifting points in his geometric set-ups. It’s intriguing to experience a physical actor like Nicholson crossing paths with Antonioni and still commanding the screen in every shot. A real feat. English language without subtitles.
