The Master (2012)

Hoezo in KINO

“If you leave me now, in the next life you will be my sworn enemy. And I will show you no mercy.” How do you follow up one of the greatest American sagas featuring an all-time performance by the ultimate method actor? Well, getting two fantastic actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman at their peak, entangled in a battle of wills, is a proper start. The Master remains PTA’s most intriguing work as its motives and that of its characters remain so ambivalent. It’s a story about scoundrels that can’t live with or without each other, manipulating their surroundings into facilitating their vices with little consequence. While There Will Be Blood portrays naked greed, The Master might be a more timely film with its study of the art of the grift, the cult of personality and how it seems so integrated into the American experience.
