Inspired by Millet’s painting Des glaneuses, Agnès Varda travels across France with a small digital camera. She seeks out people who gather what others leave behind: potatoes after the harvest, vegetables after the market and discarded objects on the street. Some do it out of poverty, others out of principle or for their art. Along the way, Varda also turns the camera on herself, as a filmmaker who “gleans” images and as a woman growing older.
