The French Connection (1971)

Hoezo in KINO

William “Hurricane Billy” Friedkin passed away at 87, recently, so we’re screening two films from his dazzling oeuvre starting September 2nd (The Exorcist is not available at this time, To Live And Die in L.A. is screening in the Müller retrospective later this month!). Friedkin’s knack for realism shines in this hardboiled police thriller based on the real police investigation concerning the heroine trade, wreaking havoc on the inner cities of the US in the late 60’s. Gene Hackman’s Oscar winning turn (the film bagged five statues including Best Director) as Jimmy ‘Popeye’ Doyle portrays an old school racist cop coming to terms with the new realities of the ‘War on Drugs’, tearing through NYC in edge-of-your-seat foot – and car chases. English language without subtitles.
