Hoezo in KINO

Armed with the eerily tragic tagline “Help me. Please, Help me.” David Cronenberg gave the original The Fly (with the equally great subtitle: “She has to kill what her husband has become”) an 1980s upgrade on par with Carpenter’s The Thing re-imagining of its 1950s counterpart. With a potent concoction of gothic love story and nightmare inducing body horror, this masterpiece of practical FX and genuine human drama holds up magnificently, even after four decades. Jeff Goldblum’s befuddled charm and Geena Davis’ wide-eyed wonder turning to abject disgust, elevate the schlocky premisse to a genre classic and definitely something to experience with an audience. English language without subtitles.

Storyline

Brilliant, eccentric scientist Seth Brundle has built a machine that can teleport matter through space, and he invites journalist Veronica Quaife to document his breakthrough. When he finally tests the device on himself, a housefly slips into the pod unnoticed. What follows is a slow and irreversible transformation, and Veronica can only watch the man she loves come apart. David Cronenberg’s body horror masterpiece, still unmatched in its mix of tenderness and revulsion.
