Special Classic Czechoslovak New Wave
Czechoslovak New Wave:

The Firemen’s Ball (1967)

Hoezo in KINO

Milos Forman’s third feature in this retrospective is his most accomplished and also his last film in his native country before he escaped to the US of A, in 1969. Contrary to belief the film was at first not banned (that happened later after the Russian invasion) and played all over the country, angering every fireman that set eyes on it. Forman actually did an apology tour for these civil servants explaining that the story about a big party where every conceivable thing goes hilariously wrong might be a satirical play on the current state of government at large. In any case, this satirical comedy is not to be missed and essential New Wave viewing. Czech Language with English subtitles.

Storyline

The firemen of a provincial Czechoslovakian town throw a ball in honor of the old chief’s retirement. There will be music and dancing, a beauty pageant and a raffle. The whole town will be in attendance. However, the proceedings are dogged by difficulty at every step. Workplace injuries, stolen prizes, a shortage of pretty girls… and fire.
