Hoezo in KINO

“You’re a madman! I love you! You’re in.” Those were the words of director, producer and comedy legend Mel Brooks after he saw Eraserhead and embraced a young David Lynch who was waiting outside of the theater for Brooks’ approval to direct The Elephant Man. “Working with Mel was sort of close to heaven. He was so supportive of me”, Lynch later stated. The only period piece in Lynch’s oeuvre was critically and publicly hailed as a masterpiece, receiving eight Academy Award noms (criminally, no wins) and it was the first – and last -big successful studio film for the young director. English language with Dutch subtitles.

Storyline

A Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man being mistreated by his “owner” as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous façade, there is revealed a person of great intelligence and sensitivity. Based on the true story of Joseph Merrick (called John Merrick in the film), a severely deformed man in 19th century London.
