After 55 years of pearl clutching censorship, Ken Russell’s brazenly sacrilegious, opulently provocative masterpiece reaches our biggest screen in the way God intended: uncut and in a freshly minted 35mm print. Prepare to be trebuchet’d into the spiritual and carnal battle for the city of Loudon, where Father Urbain Grandier battles enemies both foreign and domestic to save his flock and, most importantly, himself from corrupt cardinals, wicked inquisitors and exasperated nuns. The Devils is a trifecta of magnificent performances by Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave, fearless directing by Russell and extravagant production design by Derek Jarman; the future queer pioneer director drew inspiration from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, giving this 17th century story an otherworldly quality amongst the historically accurate debauchery. Presented in English without subtitles.

On Thursday November 12th, the screening of The Devils on 35mm will get our ‘Cult Status’ treatment and will be preceded by an ‘nunsploitation’ pre-show and the main feature is introduced by British Film Institute’s executive director, Jason Wood.

Storyline

The Devils, met Academy Award®-winnares Vanessa Redgrave en Oliver Reed, is een tijdloos en uniek cinematografisch meesterwerk. Met deze baanbrekende, iconische film over obsessie en corruptie heeft de invloedrijke regisseur Ken Russell zijn naam definitief gevestigd.

Deze nieuwe 4K-restauratie van Ken Russells meesterwerk, die samengesteld is aan de hand van het oorspronkelijke cameranegatief, toont de definitieve versie van The Devils, overeenkomstig met de edit die Russell zelf al in 2004 had gemaakt. The Devils is de ongeknipte en ongefilterde bioscoopervaring die Ken Russell altijd al voor ogen heeft gehad en voor het eerst is de film nu dus ook gerestaureerd en in 4K te zien. Het geluid van de film is geremasterd aan de hand van de oorspronkelijke Engelse ‘Composite 35mm Mag’-film – overgezet naar 96kHz – en waar nodig aangevuld met andere oorspronkelijke filmelementen. De restauratie van het beeld en het geluid zijn uitgevoerd door Warner Bros. Post Production Creative Services, Water Tower Color en Warner Bros. Sound.
