“One of us had to die. With me, it tends to be the other guy.” Nicholson’s last truly great role was also his first collaboration with another industry legend, Martin Scorsese. The fun-sized director loosely based this Boston-set Irish mob/cop flick on the Hong Kong Infernal Affairs trilogy but in true Scorsese fashion infused his version with an incredible amount of gratuitous violence, improvised humor and creative ways to consume cocaine. The cast is just brimming with three generations of acting talent all swinging for the fences to out-macho each other, but it’s Nicholson that comes out victorious with a performance so positively unhinged, it makes Alec Baldwin’s sweat-drenched police captain look meek in comparison. English language with Dutch subtitles.

Storyline

To take down South Boston’s Irish Mafia, the police send in one of their own to infiltrate the underworld, not realizing the syndicate has done likewise. While an undercover cop curries favor with the mob kingpin, a career criminal rises through the police ranks. But both sides soon discover there’s a mole among them.
