Hoezo in KINO

The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu won Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2005, and its international breakthrough helped put a new Romanian cinema on the arthouse map. Director Cristi Puiu, who drew inspiration from filmmakers such as Frederick Wiseman and John Cassavetes, turned an observational, darkly comic style towards contemporary, post-socialist Romania. The film’s long takes, real-time duration and documentary-like approach became an aesthetic blueprint for a generation of films interested in everyday life, institutions and the political realities of Romania before and after 1989. Romanian language with English subtitles.

Storyline

It is a Saturday night in Bucharest, and 63 year old Dante Remus Lăzărescu, a widower living alone with his three cats, does not feel well. He calls for an ambulance and is driven from one hospital to the next through the small hours of the night, passed between doctors who are overworked, indifferent or simply busy with more urgent cases. A paramedic named Mioara stays with him and refuses to let him disappear into the system. Cristi Puiu’s landmark of the Romanian New Wave is at once quietly devastating and unexpectedly funny.
