The Assistant (2019): The release of The Assistant was plagued (literally) by a global pandemic and scarcely seen at the time, so we’re adding this slowburn office thriller about crimes committed behind closed doors, to this retrospective. Director Kitty Green and actor Julia Garner (who teamed up again for the excellent The Royal Hotel in 2023) create an asphyxiating atmosphere in a corporate office environment where Garner’s shy worker bee slowly discovers the machinations of abuse behind the facade of HR approved lingo and feigned courtesy by powerful men in suits. The gestures and ‘moments’ are small, but precisely this makes The Assistant perfect to experience on the big screen. English language without subtitles.
