“You want me to lie to you and tell you I’m workin’ in a hot dog stand? You know I can’t do a regular job. I’m not gonna sit here and take your money.” The original script for this Dustin Hoffman passion project was penned by (a then unknown) Michael Mann and career criminal turned writer Edward Bunker. Safe to say authenticity was front and center in Straight Time. The film is a bare-bones study on the struggle of societal reintegration after incarceration. Hoffman’s Max Dembo navigates a hostile job market, the wrong crowd of ‘old friends’ and a fiendish parole officer to keep himself on that near impossible straight and narrow. The film sports a fabulous supporting cast with M. Emmet Walsh, Kathy Bates, Harry Dean Stanton, Gary Busey and Theresa Russell and we’re proud to present this cult classic in 35mm.
