For our seventh birthday this October we’ve selected one of our favourite movies also celebrating an anniversary and which is (in our humble opinion) the best Dutch film ever made: George Sluizer’s dazzling adaptation of Tim Krabbé’s novel, Het gouden ei /The Vanishing. Stanley Kubrick saw the film and immediately called Sluizer to discuss his work at length (imagine getting that call) and he later stated that he thought it was the scariest film he ever saw. Kubrick was also so impressed by the female lead of the film, Johanna ter Steege, that he cast her for his upcoming Holocaust drama, The Aryan Papers, a project that unfortunately never came to fruition because Spielberg released Schindler’s List before Kubrick started filming. This beautifully haunting thriller with a great synth score by Doe Maar frontman Henny Vrienten will be presented on a well preserved 35mm print provided by Eye Filmmuseum. As ‘Cult Status’ regulars know, we will provide an introduction and preshow in the period and style of the film. Dutch and French language with English subtitles.

Storyline

A man embarks on an increasingly obsessive search for his girlfriend after she disappears without a trace during a romantic summer getaway to France.

Het is een veelvoorkomend fenomeen: een niet-Amerikaanse film gooit hoge ogen en inspireert studiobonzen uit Hollywood tot een teleurstellend verwaterde remake voor hen die niet van ondertitels houden. Toen George Sluizer na het succes van Spoorloos zelf de kans aangreep de Amerikaanse remake te regisseren waren de verwachtingen hoog, maar helaas werd The Vanishing in 1993 beloond met een koud ontvangst van zowel critici als bioscoopbezoekers. Waar Spoorloos in 1988 een daverend succes was, zowel in de bioscopen als bij critici, is de ongenaakbare status die de film nog altijd geniet onder filmliefhebbers ook deels te danken aan het feit dat niemand minder dan Stanley Kubrick de film zag en George Sluizer opbelde om hem te zeggen dat hij Spoorloos ‘’de engste film aller tijden’’ vond, nog enger dan zijn eigen The Shining. Dit hoogwaardige compliment inspireerde YouTube-essayisten Plan-Séquence en Uncle Funtime allebei tot een onderzoek naar wat Spoorloos toch zo afgrijselijk eng maakt…(Bevat Spoilers!)
