The Complete Satoshi Kon

Satoshi Kon: The Illusionist (2021)

Hoezo in KINO

This French documentary on the life and work of Satoshi Kon was conceived to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his passing in 2010. The film sheds light on Kon’s early days as a graphic novelist and writer, fighting for recognition and better working conditions for the often exploitative workloads animators were (and are still) dealing with. We learn who influenced the artist – Katsuhiro Ôtomo from Akira fame is a mentor and collaborator – and how his work made a big impression on western filmmakers like Marc Caro (Delicatessen) and Darren Aronofsky. The film is a loving ode to the man and a perfect companion piece in discovering the man’s work. Various languages with English subtitles.
