Hoezo in KINO

With the sad passing of Hungarian slow cinema king Béla Tarr, we invite you to clear your schedule on the 24th and 27th of January  and experience his hypnotic magnum opus on our biggest screen. Sátántangó depicts the historical maelstrom of post-Soviet collapse through the events involving a small Hungarian farming commune on the brink of ruin, as they navigate the mysterious return of a member believed to be deceased. You might buy a ticket for the story, but you stay for the mesmerizing monochrome cinematography, the transcendent one-takers and the bragging rights for logging this 439 minute beast on your Letterboxd. Hungarian language with English subtitles. The film will be screened with two intermissions. The first break will be after 137 minutes and lasts 25 minutes, the second part lasts 125 minutes, followed by a 25-minute break. The remaining part then lasts 177 minutes.

Storyline

Inhabitants of a small village in Hungary deal with the effects of the fall of Communism. The town’s source of revenue, a factory, has closed, and the locals, who include a doctor and three couples, await a cash payment offered in the wake of the shuttering. Irimias, a villager thought to be dead, returns and, unbeknownst to the locals, is a police informant. In a scheme, he persuades the villagers to form a commune with him.
