Roujin Z (1991)

Hoezo in KINO

On the 21st of June we continue our Kaboom Animation and Melkweg Cinema joined effort to bring you the best Japanese anime has to offer. Katsuhiro Otomo, the demi-god that bestowed the manga and animation marvel that is Akira on us, takes the writing credits for Roujin Z, an excellent subject to flex his talent for scripting misfits and societal outcasts. Not juvenile bikers, this time, but a focus on the other end of the spectrum: the elderly, and how they are marginalized in society. A beautifully realised indictment of the system through the eyes of a young nurse caring for an older gentleman strapped to a ‘revolutionary’ healthcare bed that keeps him alive. Japanese with English subtitles.

Storyline

An elderly invalid is volunteered for a bizarre science experiment. He is given a robotic bed linked directly to his brainwaves, allowing instant gratification. This seems like a wonderful deal, until this seemingly harmless bed goes out of control and transforms into an unstoppable robot.
