Special Classic Paul Thomas Anderson

Phantom Thread (2017)

Hoezo in KINO

“The tea is going out. The interruption is staying right here with me.” Famously, Daniel Day-Lewis returned to acting from his no doubt marvelous cobbling activities in Florence, for one last hurrah (not counting his son’s movie released later this year) as the preposterously monikered and oh-so particular fashion designer, Reynolds Woodcock. This “hungry boy” meets more than his match in a waitress turned muze with benefits, Alma (a dazzling Vicky Krieps). Day-Lewis plays insufferable to a tittle as the head of a fashion house that seems antiquated even in this London set period piece. But in our humble opinion the real MVP of the film is Lesley Manville, playing long-suffering sibling Cyril, ‘protecting’ the family business against romantic distractions. A strangely beautiful and oddly comedic feature that showcases PTA’s knack for oddball romance. Love is strange, indeed. English language with Dutch subtitles.
