Hoezo in KINO

Jennie Livingston invested seven years to film this 70 minute subculture defining chronicle on the NYC ‘ballroom’ movement that spawned voguing as an expression and created a much needed sheltering environment for the mainly black and latinx LGBTQIA+ community. The sequences on the catwalk at the balls are riotous and celebratory, starkly juxtaposed by the intimate interviews with contestants and organizers revealing the daily struggle and dangers members of this community are to this day exposed to. We can screen this independent documentary gem only once, so do not miss out! English language without subtitles.

Storyline

Where does voguing come from, and what, exactly, is throwing shade? This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s through the eyes of New York City’s African American and Latinx Harlem drag-ball scene. Made over seven years, PARIS IS BURNING offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion “houses,” from fierce contests for trophies to house mothers offering sustenance in a world rampant with homophobia, transphobia, racism, AIDS, and poverty. Featuring legendary voguers, drag queens, and trans women — including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, and Venus Xtravaganza
