Hoezo in KINO

Almost twenty years after Just Another Girl on the I.R.T., Dee Rees embarks with the same premisse – a coming of age debut feature set in Brooklyn concerning a young woman – but her focus lies on the experience of queer black teen Alike, navigating love, family and group pressure while coming to terms with her sexuality. This film is superbly shot by DoP Bradford Young (who would shoot Selma, A Most Violent Year and Arrival after this), pulling you into Alike’s multiple predicaments with a soft lens and colourful palette. The script is thoughtfully penned bij Rees and utilizes a layered central performance by Adepero Oduye that should have garnered more accolades. English language without subtitles.
