“I saw a Rohmer film once. It was kind of like watching paint dry.” Arthur Penn’s taught direction, Alan Sharp’s hardboiled script and Gene Hackman’s sardonic performance rounded out by a great supporting cast, is in our opinion the best work for all involved and might be our favourite American film of the mid-70’s. The ‘private dick takes a case and gets in way over his head’ ploy is rolled out expertly when a teenage girl (Melanie Griffith’s debut) in need of finding, unravels a much larger mystery thread of illicit activities in the greater Los Angeles area. Night Moves is a semi-hidden gem that influenced many modern filmmakers with its lived in aesthetics and natural look. As the 35mm Gods look upon us favourably, this is indeed a unique chance to experience this great flick on the big screen. English language without subtitles.

Storyline

Private detective and former football player Harry Moseby gets hired on to what seems a standard missing person case – a former Hollywood actress wants Moseby to find and return her daughter. Harry travels to Florida to find her, but he begins to see a connection between the runaway girl, the world of Hollywood stuntmen, and a suspicious mechanic when an unsolved murder comes to light.
