Hoezo in KINO

Chantal Akerman has become a household name since topping the BFI 100 Best Films list with the meditative Jeanne Dielman, but the Belgian born director is hardly a one hit wonder. One of her best works came from her move to New York in the early 1970s, News from Home, combining the worrisome letters her mother wrote her weekly with the gradual loudening street impressions of her new hometown. It’s a mesmerizing work both soothing and alienating the viewer with the simplest of ingredients. Your own memories of wandering a strange city alone will take care of the rest. French language with English subtitles. The first screening of News from Home will be introduced by film editor and long-time collaborator of Akerman, Claire Atherton. Atherton worked together with the director on many documentaries, fiction films and video installations for over three decades. Atherton will join us in KINO all the way from Paris for an introduction about the director and the lasting legacy of her work.

Storyline

Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman lives in New York. Filmed images of the City accompany texts of Akerman’s loving mother back home in Brussels. The City comes more and more to the front while the words of the mother, read by Akerman herself, gradually fade away.
