“Cinema is a language that can say abstractions. I love stories, but I love stories that hold abstractions. A lot of times, I don’t know the meaning of the idea. It drives me crazy.” Mulholland Drive started out as a television pilot episode and later metamorphosized into the feature film we come to ‘know’ and revere. This might explain the discombobulating experience of watching this dark fantasy on the trepidations of Hollywood, that hits you like a sudden hobo encounter. Only a complete “madman” (we’re quoting the great Mel Brooks, here) like Lynch could make such a transformation of format and scope not only work – but excel – in such a wonderfully wicked manner. English language with Dutch subtitles.
